The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a legislation passed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in order to prohibit racial discrimination in voting.

There are several events that contributed to the passing of the legislation. The Selma to Montgomery marches (1965) is one of the most important ones. The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was also relevant, as it was the first civil rights legislation passed since the Civil Rights Act of 1875. Finally, the passage of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendment contributed enormously to the civil rights movement and the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
