The Spanish had very frightening superior weapons with their horses, attack dogs, cannon, muskets along with steel swords and metal armor. Although not the deciding factor, these advantages certainly had their level of shock and awe. Plus they served to convince other Native tribes to join with the Spanish against the Aztecs.
