the wilmot proviso called for a ban on slavery in the land newly acquired from Mexico. the south did not support this as they wanted the practice of slavery to expand west while the north did support this as they wanted to end or reduce the practice of slavery. the compromise of 1850 established California as a free state, defined the Texas border, abolished DC slave trade, allowed new states to vote on if it would have slaves or not, and it strengthened the fugitive slave law. the north was fine with it because slave trade in DC was over and that resources rich California was a free state. the south was fine with it because Texas got more land, new states could be slave states, and the fugitive slave law made it so their escaped slaves couldn't go north and become free.
