What did the Missouri Compromise say about states that joined the union above the southern line of Missouri?

    nswer: Missouri would be admitted to the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free state.

    There was great tension and pressure in the mid-1800s to keep the balance of free and slave states equal. But eventually comprises stopped working and the Civil War was fought.
