The citizens of the Roman republic were responsible of the election of people into positions in the public office. This elections was usually done annually except for the censor whose term in office was five years. Elections took place in the Roman empire until it was stopped by he first Roman Emperor, but elections at local levels still continued.

In the Greek city of Athens, citizens were allowed to vote and be voted for into the assembly with the exception of slaves, women and men below 20 years. The assembly were responsible for the making of laws that guided the city.
