The House of Stuart was a royal house that originated in Scotland. This house succeeded the House of Tudor, and preceded the House of Hanover in the English throne. Although the name was originally "Stewart," Mary Queen of Scots adopted the French spelling of the name, Stuart. The first ruler of the House of Stuart was James VI of Scotland, who ruled England and Ireland as James I. The Stuarts ruled the British Isles (with the exception of the period 1649-1660) until the death of Queen Anne in 1714.
