European settlers stripped forests for fuel and building materials. They reduced fertile, converted hillsides into wastelands, and eradicated species of plants and animals. Europeans weeds stated edged out native plants from the areas. Animals became extinct like beaver, mink, and otter as they hunted for their furs.
