    A. Philip Randolph founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids believed in the importance of organizing workers for a fair wage. He also believed that economic power was an important companion for civil rights. Wages, fair living conditions and access to education were important parts of empowerment programs for African Americans.
