The 1870s continued the trends of the previous decade, as new empires, imperialism and militarism rose in Europe and Asia. The United States was recovering from the American Civil War ... The Reconstruction era of the United States brought a legacy of bitterness and segregation that lasted until the 1960s.

The labor movement usually brought violence and anger, which led the government to use force against the Unions which often instigated the violence ... The government reacted to this by using special deputies to handle the mail, who used violence to force the Labor Union to end the strike.
