    the slaves and cotton were both from Africa, so the masters wanted both

    Cotton was a big industry for Southern plantation owners before the civil war. They wanted workers for their cotton fields, but did not want to pay wages. Therefore, they got slaves to do it. They paid for the slaves initially, but it was less than paying wages to non slaves.
