Justinian was the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, or Byzantine Empire, since 527 until his death in 565. He is known as Justinian the Great and he tried to revive the glory of the ancient Roman Empire. For that reason, he sent his troops, led by his general Belisarius, to reconquer the western territories from the hands of the Vandals and the Ostrogoth, which they did. He also expanded trade between the Byzantine Empire and the markets from Northern Europe and the Silk Road, which enriched Constantinople in a great way. Moreover, under Justinian rule Roman law was revised, reformed, and codified in the text known as Codex Justinianeus.

On the other hand, under Justinian barbarian tribes were not expelled from Europe. Justinian ruled during the same era in which barbarian tribes were thriving through massive migration flux throughout Europe. This process is known as the barbarian invasions.
