HoChi Minh's main goal when he became the leader of the nationalist movement in Vietnam in 1940 was to gain Vietnam's independence from France.

After a long trip, HoChi Minh returned to Vietnam after 20 years on February 8, 1941. He immediately convened a plenary session of the Vietnamese Communist Party in which it was decided to create a broad political front to fight against the new Japanese occupier and the French colonial power, which they called Viet Minh.

The Viet Minh organized a general insurrection, achieved national independence (on September 2, 1945, declared in Hanoi) and founded the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, a socialist state. But when the French colonialists returned in 1946, a new and bloody war that lasted for nine years was unleashed.
