At the beginning of 20th Century Austria-Hungary was the most diverse country in Europe. After the country annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908 this created additional problems for the country regarding its both internal and external politics.

Most of the population of Austria-Hungary were Slavs: Croats, Serbs, Slovaks, etc, and they were satisfied with the way they were treated. That is why they created national movements for deliberation from the hands of Austria-Hungary, and managed to do that after World War 1 ended.
