The Stono Rebellion took place in the colony of South Caroline in 1739. It was the largest slave upraising in the British continental colonies, where more than 50 people were killed. It was conducted by African native slaves.

The slaves were probably trying to reach St. Augustine in Northeastern Florida, where the Spanish rulers had promised freedom and land to fugitive slaves. It was actually a strategy of the Spanish to destabilize British power in North America.

After this rebellion, the Negro Act was enacted in 1740 to limit the rights of slaves related to ssembly, education or movement.
