Some argue today that Lincoln saved democracy itself for the world. What words from his speeches indicate he was attempting to do this?

Abraham Lincoln, was the president of the United States from a period of time of four years (1861 to 1865), he was also a lawyer, and statesman. He was a skilled and one of the greatest orators in the United States history, giving hundreds of speeches that are still studied for their oratory and eloquence powers. In his speeches Lincoln defined democracy as the equal rights and equality of opportunity. However, he made a difference between basic natural rights like freedom from slavery and political and civil rights such as voting.

One of his most important speeches, was the one delivered after the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, in this speech not only he quoted that "all men are created equal", but also that "democracy is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people", meaning that is the people who confer higher power and exercise it directly or by their elected representatives under a free electoral system.
