The US government paid $7.2 million during that time for buying Alaska. However, the Alaska purchase created a great controversy in United States. There were advocates and critics on both side for purchasing Alaska.

    Some called it as Seward's folly or Seward's ice garden as William Seward was the key American negotiator to buy Alaska and he was the US state secretary during that time. Moreover, some people and news paper called it as polar bear garden as the land frozen.

    On the other, hand the people who supported the purchase in USA, they thought the purchase of Alaska would increase the power of USA by creating bond with Russia. Moreover, USA could create a base here to expand trade with Northern Pacific area.
