Iraq had invaded Kuwait, which was a major source of the world's oil

    Explanation:

Kuwait is a small nation located just south of Iraq. Even though it is small, it posses enormous amount of oil reserves. The economic interest and the territorial aspirations of the Iraqis, led to military offensive and invasion of the small nation. The UN coalition troops intervened very quickly, getting in Kuwait as quick as possible and fighting against the Iraqis. The mission was successful, and the UN coalition forces managed to defeat Iraq's forces, so Kuwait got its independence back and the control over its valuable oil reserves.
