However, the legalists were defeated, which allowed the patriots to advance in pursuit of their goal.

    North Carolina Loyalists were recruited by the British, and defeated by the Patriots during the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge in 1776. During the American Revolution, North Carolina colony had two parties. First the Patriots or Whigs, those who were in favor of independence. Second the Loyalist or Tories, the ones that were loyal to the King but refused British taxes. After the Lexington Battle back in 1775, the British strength its troops through the recruitment of Loyalist groups, many of them recruited by North Carolina's Governor Josiah Martin. Finally, on February 27, 1776, North Carolina's Loyalists were defeated by the Patriots. Approximately, 50 Loyalists were injured or died during the battle.
