How did the Souths economy put it at a disadvantage in the civil war

    The Southern states' economy was heavily reliant on the ability to sell their main crops-cotton, tobacco, indigo, and rice-to the rest of the Union as well as Europe. This, along with the fact that they did not have the industrial capacity to produce manufactured items that were needed, put them at a disadvantage.
