A possible answer: After WWI, many areas in Eastern Europe and the Middle East were divided by the nations of the Triple Entente, who created new nations out of ethnically and religiously mixed areas. Ever since, there's been lots of tension between religions within nations, as outside Western powers monetarily support one faction over the other.
