Explanation: The territory that is known today as Oklahoma has a history of human occupation dating back 15,000 years. Its name is a direct reference to this since Okla means "people" and humma means "red". In other words, the territory was known as an indigenous territory. After the war of 1812, the government decided to push Indian tribes from East to West and settle them in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. But during the 1870s, illegal settlements in the Indian Territory flourished. Because of that, the territory was divided into two: Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory. In 1902, the leaders of Indian Territory held a convention in Eufaula with representatives of five tribes (Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminole) in order to create a state of their own named Sequoyah. In the next year, they got together again and drafted a Constitution and an organizational plan for government. The US Government didn't see as a good idea to separate both territories, the Indian Territory (IT) and the Oklahoma Territory (OT). President Theodore Roosevelt and Congress turned down the Indian Territory proposal. But William H. Murray, the Chickasaws representative, and Charles N. Haskell, selected to represent the Creeks, proposed to combine both territories under the name of Oklahoma. They used the constitution from Sequoyah convention as a basis to the state constitution and on November 16 of 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt signed the proclamation establishing Oklahoma as the nation's 46th state. Clearly, people wanted to live in a free, brand new state, as an official part of the Union and with their own Constitution.
