    He had a fine veronica sewed to cap. His wallet lay before him in his lap, Stuffed full of pardons brought from Rome all hot.

    So, from these lines that describe the pardoner in Chaucer's prologue to The Canterbury Tales, it can be inferred that he was an unethical man because during this time, one could put on sale "pardons" and the pardoner made his money from selling "pardons".
