William Jennings Bryan D. called for the unrestricted mining of silver.

The economic panic of 1893 left the country in a deep recession. Bryan and others Democrats thought the solutions was to return to bimetallism, which would inflate the currency and make it easier for debtors to pay their loans. In order to do that, an increment on the silver production would have been necessary.
