Answer: Luther had differing beliefs from the church.
Explanation: Luther swore that he would become a monk rather than a lawyer if God protected him from a bad storm. He was spared, and thus became an Augustinian monk. But during years of studying Catholic beliefs in accordance with the Bible, he ended up believing different things about justification, and he began writing books on his view. He even translated the Bible from Latin to German, which angered the Church, since they believed it was the Popes duty to "translate" the Bible, and the laymen had to accept everything he said as truth, no matter how heretical or controversial they were. His reformation, which began when he posted the 95 theses on the church door, was very abrasive to the Catholic Church, and he was often in danger of losing his life. During the Diet of Worms, he was given the choice to take back everything he had written and taught and proclaimed them as false, or lose his life. He refused to repeal, and for a long time he was in exile and excommunication.
