Which event do you think influenced the Civil War the most? And why?

The Civil War started because of uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power of the national government to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states. The North thought that everyone should be free even slaves. The South didn't want that because they really depended on slaves.
