    The dissolution of the Soviet Union had a devastating effect on Cuba's economy. The country lost about 80% of its import and the GDP dropped by 34%.

    Cuba remained the only Marxist nation within the Western Hemisphere and had to find new trading partners, mostly in Latin America.

    Despite all this, communism in Cuba was not abandoned and continued as the only allowed and carried out political system.
