Why should historians make sound generalizations rather than oversimplifications when analyzing sources

    Sound generalizations can accommodate a variety of complex sources.

    Explanation:

    Generalizations are not necessarily wrong, to begin with. You can say that, for example, in the past, men were generally in charge. Which is objectively true.

    Oversimplifications, though, are problematic by definition, since they are: "a simplification of something to such an extent that a distorted impression is given."
