The US-Mexican war was instigated by six things:

1.) The arguable boundary between Mexico and Texas-the US thought it was the Rio Grande River, while Mexico thought it was the Nueces River.

2.) US made an offer on California-which was a part of Mexico back then-for its port in San Francisco, because it would let the US trade freely along the Pacific coast, and because they believed in Manifest Destiny. This offer offended Mexico, so much so, they refused to meet with the US's leader.

3.) American merchants in Mexico had their property damaged and hadn't been properly reimbursed.

4.) Mexico refused to recognize Texas's independence.

5.) The unstable anti-US government in Mexico definitely caused immense tension between the two countries.

6.) Texas had become a part of the US; leaving Mexico.
