Italy joined the allies because of the treaty of London and it wanted territory on the order of Austria-Hungary.

Answer: Italy switched sides during ww1 because the side that they were on from start looked like they would lose and war and Italy didn't want to be on the losing side. They wanted more land as well and it didn't look like they would get any if they stayed with the Central Powers so they went to the other side since Germany promised them land if they joined.
