The right answer is C: Republic. The monarchy was the first form of government of the city-state of Rome, from its foundation in the year 753 BC until the year 510 BC, when the last king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, was exiled. The following year Rome became a republic, and the former kings were replaced by elected magistrates, following the system of the Greek city-states. Nevertheless, the republic was never a democracy, but an oligarchy, since the power was in the hands of a few families. During this period in the history of ancient Rome, which was marked by continous wars, the city expanded its territory, gaining eventually control over the entire Mediterranean world. The Roman republic concluded in the year 27 BC.
