Which best describes President Johnson's influence during Reconstruction? He had influence among Republicans but not Democrats. He had influence in the House but not the Senate. He was much more influential than his predecessor. He did not have the political support that Lincoln had.

    Andrew Johnson was a Democrat and after Lincoln's death concerned the Republican dominated Congress. There was fear that Johnson would not create a Reconstruction plan that would be consistent with the wants and goals of the North.

    Johnson's Reconstruction plan was similar to Lincoln's plan however, as a Democrat he did not get the same respect and support that Lincoln would have received. He proved too forgiving to the former Confederate states for the liking of the Republican Congress. As a result, Congress eventually took over Reconstruction using congressional veto to override the presidential policies. Reconstruction under Congress was harsh and allowed for military occupation of Confederate states.
