Most of the justifications for genocide are based on eugenic explanations. Eugenics is the scientific idea that one can improve the population through controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics. These ideas were applied in Nazi Germany and used to justify the extermination of races deemed less desirable. Similar ideas were at work during the Rwandan massacre in the 1990s.
