Why did the southern state leave the union

some people argue it was over slavery vs. legal rights. the fact of the matter is that both statements are correct; specifically southern states did have major taxes put on their exports (agriculture gained through slavery is their main export) which made it impossible to actually make money. so they decided to leave the union
