Lombardy should not struggle for independence because it had strong bonds with Austria. Lombardy should be an independent nation-state because it had a strong national identity. Lombardy should not be kept from enjoying personal independence because of Austria's actions.

    Guiseppe Mazzini was an Italian journalist and politician. He was also an activist for the unification of Italy. He was in exile in Marseille, when he sent an open letter to the king of Piedmont, to urge him to expel the Austrians from Lombardy-Venice and other Italian strongholds.
