His Vice-president John Adams sustained that the title of presidents of the United States should be His Highness the President of the United States and Protector of the Rights of the Same. He supported this idea because he considered that the title of a head of state of a great nation should project the outmost dignity. Several senators were opposed to such a flamboyant and monarchical title and George Washington decided that a simple Mr. President would suffice as title for the POTUS.
