James Watt was a Scottish inventor who perfected the steam engine.

The Steam engine is largely seen as being the primary driver of the first half of the Industrial Revolution, before coal and other forms of power took hold.

The Industrial Revolution had many consequences for the people engaged but the primary social consequence was that it drove the movement of people from rural areas to urban areas where they could be closer to jobs.
