    When the Spanish colonists arrived to the Americas, they encountered climates that they had never seen before. They also found crops and animals that were unknown in Europe but that became very popular quickly, like sugar cane, chocolate or tomatoes. To take advantage of the weather, the soil and the local knowledge of crops, different areas of the Americas were destined to different types of production and thus different types of colonies.

    Further colonization by the French, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English followed a similar pattern for similar reasons.
