The "Cotton Kingdom" was known as the development of the production of cotton in the southern states in the years after the independence. Due to technological innovations, such as the "cotton gin", created by Eli Whitney, the production of cotton grew dramatically. In the middle of the nineteenth century, the United States produced more than 80 % of the world's cotton. Jefferson's vision of the United States was that of a nation where agriculture would be the predominant industry. The "cotton kingdom" certainly supported this vision.
