Bison can adapt to extreme weather conditions, such as the one of the Great Plains. They can tolerate high temperatures in the summer but at the same time survive the blizzards during the winter. This made it possible for Bison to flourish.

At the same time, bison are important for other species in the ecosystem. They often roll in the ground, creating depressions in the soil known as "wallows". Wallows allowed other animal and plant species to populate these territories. Bison eat grass, creating vast extensions of land with short grass, making it easier for other species to transit the place. They were also considered as a food source not only for Native Americans but for predators like wolves.
