Between the years 1783 and 1860, the United States government focused its foreign policy on increasing its sovereign territory. This meant, in essence, claiming as much land as possible for the United States. During this period, the United States was highly successful in reaching its foreign policy goal. Firstly, it defended American sovereignty when the British attempted to block US trade with France and force Americans to serve in the British Navy. Secondly, the United States declared supremacy in the Western hemisphere with the Monroe Doctrine, claiming that the West had been colonized and that the United States reigned supreme. Lastly, the American government more than doubled the size of the United States with the additions of territories acquired in the Louisiana Purchase, the Texas annexation, and the Mexican Cession.
