New England merchants feared British attacks on their seaports because British warships were disrupting US trade and threatening seaports along the Atlantic coast. One of the reasons why the United States went to war in 1812 was: the threats from Native Americans supported by the British and the impression of American sailors on the high seas by the British Navy.
