Many Europeans favored communism after WWII because they did not want to risk aggravating Russia as they needed their assistance. Great Britain and the U. S. did not have a very stable relationship with Russia in the first place, and so all the deals made after the fact tended to be more lenient due to Churchill not being reinstated and the death of Roosevelt during WWII.
