If there are nearly 4,000,000 slaves in the United States, why did only 100,000 escape along the railroad?

    Slavery was a very repressive system. Escaping from slavery was very difficult and the Underground Railroad could accommodate only so many people.

    Explanation: Enslaved people were considered valuable property, so owners took precautions and prevented runaways as much as possible
