Not everybody wanted to be independent, so this declaration could get the support of other colonists. The soldiers were mostly farmers and it gave them a very good reason to fight for. Moreover, being an independent nation, the United States could ask foreign nations for money and supplies. There were federalists and Anti-Federalists, so not everybody agreed on certain issues
