    Various motives prompt empires to seek to expand their rule over other countries or territories

    Mostly to gain resources, which mostly expanded during and after the Industrial Age. Since they were trying to support the global demand for luxuries, they needed materials to make those products. Thus they imperialized lands as seen in the Scramble of Africa and Spheres of Influence.
