The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, commonly known as the Red Cross or the Red Crescent, is a global humanitarian movement of particular and unique characteristics, for its particular relationship based on international agreements with states and international organizations for a truly humanitarian purpose.

The components of the Movement, while retaining their independence within the limits of the Statute of the Movement, always act in accordance with their Fundamental Principles and collaborate with each other in the performance of their respective tasks and to carry out their common mission.

The components of the Movement meet with the States Parties to the Geneva Conventions of July 27, 1929 or August 12, 1949 at the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has always had a recognized role in the development and promotion of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Aware of the challenges of full respect, the ICRC created an Advisory Service on International Humanitarian Law in 1996 to strengthen its capacity to provide services to States in that area, covering concrete and necessary measures for the implementation of the Conventions on Geneva and its Additional Protocols, the various arms treaties, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and other relevant treaties.
