George Whitefield was one of the most popular preachers of the First Great Awakening in American society. The Great Awakening was a religious revival movement in which new forms of Christianity developed including Baptist, Presbyterian, etc. This Great Awakening was focused on having a "new birth" experience in which citizens dedicated their life to the church and following the teachings of the Bible.

Whitefiled gave a speaking tour that went across almost all of the 13 colonies in which he encouraged people to join this new wave of religion in the colonies in order to achieve salvation in their after life.
