Evaluate the extent to which sectional conflict from 1820 to 1860 contributed to maintaining continuity as well as fostering change in political ideals and attempts to compromise.

I merely throw out these sentiments for the purpose of showing you that South Carolina, having declared her purpose tobe this, to make experiment whether, by a course of legislation, in a conventional form, or legislative form of enactment, she can defeat the execution of certain laws of the United States. I, for one, will express my opinion that I believe it is utterly impracticable, whatever course of legislation she may choose to adopt, for her to succeed ... I say it is impossible that South Carolina ever desired for a moment to become a separate and independent state.

The clash between those in favor and those against slavery did not contribute to maintaining continuity nor fostered change in political ideals and attempts to compromise.

    Explanation:

In the 19th century South Carolina depended much on the cultivation of cotton. Especially the Low Country planters depended heavily on slaves. They fought federal tariffs in the 1830s and demanded the recognition of its rights on practising slavery. With the election of A. Lincoln (opposed to slavery's expansion) in 1860 the voters demanded secession and a year later joined the Confederate States. In the same year American Civil War broke out.
