After the Great Famine, Irish nationalists pushed for more freedom from British control, but the British stalled because they feared the minority Irish Protestants would face persecution in a country controlled by Catholics. Many Irish nationalists turned to violence, and in 1916 they launched a rebellion (the Easter Rebellion or Uprising) in the city of Dublin on Easter Sunday. Though the revolt was crushed, it created more support for Irish nationalism and fueled anger and resentment of oppressive British rule.
