How did English laws contribute to the development of freedom and self-government in the American colonies?

Britain's policy of salutary neglect in the mid 1700s led to an explosion of self governance on a small level in the colonies which led to more and more citizens believing that perhaps they didn't actually need the Crown and that Colonies should be governed by the people in the colonies.
